Planning a Wedding in Unfamiliar Territory

This post is filed under: Guest Blog Entries | Direct Link: Planning a Wedding in Unfamiliar Territory

Hello, I’m Kate. I’m a 32 year old transplant to the Capital Region. I grew up in Dutchess County and I know lower New York like the back of my hand. However, my family is from the Albany area so when work gave me the opportunity to move up here, I jumped at it.

I met my fiancé before I had moved up here. I knew that I was leaving behind a network of friends and that I hoped to establish one in my new location. I like to think of myself as resourceful and as an IT Professional; the first place I turn to is the web. I went on Match.com to try to find people to hang out with. Shawn happened to be one of the only people whose profile interested me enough to want to reach out to talk to him. We made plans to go bowling and play pool, never intending to be more than friends. That old cliché about finding what you’re looking for when you stop looking is so true. We hit it off and have been together ever since; and this past Christmas, he proposed to me.

Although my wedding choices are often not in the traditional style of your glamorous white wedding, I am one of those brides. I started planning when I was 20 years old. I’ve got a binder with printed pictures and ideas for different aspects of the wedding (such as dresses, flowers, hair). I have always kept this binder current when my ideas change and so I had a pretty clear picture of how I wanted my wedding to be. What I didn’t have a clue about was the Capital Region.

Like, I said, I’m from Dutchess County. I know where to find everything I’m looking for… down there. So I felt a little bit crippled up here. I turned to my favorite resource, the internet, and started searching. Imagine how happy I was to find New York Wedding Boutique. I became an avid blog stalker, enjoying the photos of other couples at their venues. I got to read about vendors in a candid manner and see their work first-hand.

I still have 10 months to go, but NYWB has helped me with vendor selections. When I saw the amazing work done by Fleurtacious Designs through pictures on your website, I had to meet Kris Ann. After a consultation session, I could tell that she really knows her stuff and takes the time to get to know
her clients. After hearing the ideas she has, I am incredibly excited about her plans for my flowers.

Another great NYWB find for me was Shannon Whitney of Wedding Planning Plus. I honestly do not want to have to worry about anything on the day of my wedding and thanks to Shannon, I won’t have to. About 6 months before Shawn proposed, I had already decided I wanted to marry him and had begun my blog stalking regime. I started talking to Shannon through email and ended up recommending her to a friend in need. As we know from her NYWB blog (Katie and Neil’s Albany Wedding), Katie’s wedding ended up being perfect and Shannon was a big part of making that happen.

Shannon has already helped me out with finding the right venue for my vision and has soothed my nerves on more than one occasion. Knowing that she will be there to help me through the process means I don’t have to worry about the fact that I’m not from here and I don’t know who any of the vendors are. Between Shannon and NYWB, I am confident that I can find everything I’m looking for.
